“GAS STATION TV Song Notes”

Gas Station TV had been brewing for several years, as I was amused by the mini-television screens at gas stations. I started filming what was being shown on those little tv screens about 5 years ago. During COVID, during the elections, during the overseas wars and strife, government shutdowns, riots and shootings in our nation, and in our hometown, and so many more crucial events, gas station tv was the ultimate in trivial news, and advertising. What an escape it was, as well as a metaphor for the escapism that I and I believe so many others, find on tv and radio shows. We could all be watching a show on gardening, or a comedy, or a game show, or a manufactured, scripted reality show, while the world is in turmoil.

So Gas Station TV is an acknowledgment, and an embracing, of escapism, and also expresses my need to take a break from it all. I had a lot of fun writing and recording the song, as it felt like a musical comedy sketch, that was upbeat musically, and maintained a soft political punch.

I WAS DRIVING IN MY CAR, WHEN THE YELLOW LIGHT CAME ON,

GONNA RUN OUT OF FUEL BEFORE TOO LONG,

I PULLED INTO A STATION, AND A LITTLE SCREEN APPEARED,

AT THE TOP OF THE PUMP, MADE ME JUMP,

IT WAS, ……, GAS STATION TV,

THERE WERE DANCING M AND M’S ACROSS THAT LITTLE SCREEN,

LUKE BRYAN WAS SINGING, A COUNTRY THING

THEY A SHOWED A WHITE HOUSE MEETING IN WASHINGTON DC

POLITICIANS ALL WERE LAUGHING, I GUESS THEY MADE A DEAL,

GAS STATION TV, ….. IS ALL THE NEWS I NEED,

GET RID OF CABLE, THROW AWAY YOUR DISH,

BBC AND FOX NEWS YOU WON’T MISS,

CNN AND THE NIGHTLY NEWS, THEY’RE WAY TOO DEPRESSING,

SO I’LL CHOOSE, ..… GAS STATION TV,

YOU CAN’T CHANGE THE CHANNEL, THE VOLUME’S STUCK ON THREE,

THAT’S OK, YOU’RE KIND OF WATCHING IT FOR FREE,

ELECTRIC CAR OWNERS, YOU’RE OUT OF LUCK,

CAUSE I’M EATING ON CHEETO’S, AND COFFEE’S JUST A BUCK,

AT THE GAS STATION, WITH GAS STATION TV

NO ONE DIES, NO ONE CRIES,

NO ONE LIES, NO FINANCIAL SURPRISE,

NO FACT CHECKING, CAUSE NOTHINGS EVER WRONG,

AND EVERY STORY IS, ….. ONLY 8 SECONDS LONG,

WELL I DROVE 400 MILES JUST TO REFUEL,

AT THAT STATION THAT I WAS AT, IT WAS QUITE THE JEWEL,

THERE WERE A LONG LINE OF CARS, WHEN I CAME BACK,

I GUESS THEY FELT THE SAME, AND NEEDED SOME GAS,
